Before you can register a fictitious name on Sunbiz, Florida makes you run a notice in a local paper. Once. In Miami-Dade County that paper is Miami Today. Plan on one to two weeks, and keep the affidavit the paper sends back.
This applies if the business's principal place of business is anywhere in Miami-Dade County: Miami, Hialeah, Miami Gardens, Coral Gables, Homestead, or unincorporated.
The papers
Miami Today. Thursdays. $99 for a one-time notice, paid by noon Tuesday. The proof of publication mails the day it prints.
Daily Business Review. Daily, $35 for a one-time notice. Miami's Community News and Miami New Times also qualify. Four papers, four forms, four price lists, and the notice has to match your Sunbiz filing character for character whichever one you choose.
The timeline
- Submit the notice to Miami Today by noon Tuesday.
- The notice prints once.
- The paper sends the affidavit of publication. Keep it.
- Register your DBA on Sunbiz, pay the state $50, and certify that you advertised.
